I chose to do a higher part time over 2 years. I was able to do an open higher which meant i could choose 2 different topics to learn. I chose child and youth services and child psychology and secondly, criminology.
I have completed the child psychology and am currently over half way there with the criminology.

What iv learned about child psychology
This topic was really interesting and there are so many different topics including – Development, Trauma, social situations, family dynamics, mental health problems, education, life circumstances, poverty, those in care and so much more. Obviously due to it being psychology a lot of it is based around the brain and how it processes information and what the brain looks like in people who may have experienced trauma. It is amazing what our brains do and its so interesting to learn about all different parts of the brain and their uses.
I also really enjoyed looking into nature/nurture - it is such a big thing in psychology.
I have enjoyed being able to understand my own step children by learning skills on how young people perceive things and how they can be impacted by things in life. Along with being able to understand more of the struggles that todays youth face and how to go about things in their best interests.

My plan
I decided to look into Child Psychology as i want to train as a youth counsellor. I thought doing a higher for a start would get me set up and let me see how the workload would be. I plan to train as a youth coach and then come back to criminology and psychology and work towards a degree. I plan to work from home doing the youth coaching while I go on to study counselling for young people. I am carrying on with the criminology just for fun! I feel that iv done really well with this course so far and want to develop my knowledge on the subject.
I have a passion for learning and developing my skills in order to help young people one day. I think its a very hard time to be a young person in this day and age. I want to be able to help people and be someone who i might have needed in my teenage years, someone to guide them and make sure they reach their full potential.
